OK, the full story:

A while back, Cass was visiting my parents to learn how to cook Indian food. As Cass was cooking, she was sending me pics/videos of her cooking tandoori chicken and keema and paranthas. And I decided to post some of them on Instagram.

Suddenly, I started getting a crazy amount of comments:

"Oh my god, that looks so good"
"When is your mom going to teach a cooking class?"
"I wish I could be there"

I posted on Instagram, asking if my mom should do an Indian food cooking bootcamp.

I thought it was funny. But I'm also like a hound dog, sniffing around to see what people are interested in.

So I posted something else: "Who here would want to take a cooking class?" I got 50 DMs saying "ME!!!" in about 10 minutes.

I was still skeptical, and it was getting late. So I posted this on Instagram: "OK, guys. Let's do a cooking class. My mom will teach it. $100, send an email to ramit.sethi@iwillteachyoutoberich.com, subject line COOKING BOOTCAMP. I'll let you know tomorrow if we'll do it."

I woke up with about 30 emails saying YES!! I'm IN!!!

There was just one problem: I hadn't yet told my mom she was about to become a teacher. LOL!

This was one of my favorite moments: I called my mom and told her that about 10,000 people had watched videos of her cooking and they were begging to take a cooking class from her.

She said, "What? They want to learn from ME?" You could hear the disbelief in her voice.

And then I told her that 30 people had already volunteered to pay $100 to take a cooking class from her. "Mom, they want to PAY to learn how to cook from you!"

You could hear the silence. She was amazed. She nervously said, "Well, I don't know any of that IT stuff..."

I smiled and just told her not to worry about any of that. "You just cook, Mom. People want to see you."

I ended up flying her to New York. I kept things simple — my wife designed the logo. We collected payment on Eventbrite and I used my old webcam to film it and broadcast live through Zoom.

IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. We had people from all over the world watching, cooking alongside as my mom did it.

And I got to send my mom the full check.

I'm sharing this story with you to make three points:

You can earn more using the skills you already have. My mom has cooked for my family for 30+ years. She did it because she loved seeing us happily eating food and sitting around the dinner table every day. She didn't realize there were people all over the world who would BEG her to share what she knows, and PAY her for it. But it's true.
Don't be a perfectionist! You don't need to have everything figured out to start. I used Eventbrite, an old webcam, and that's it. Keep it simple to start. (And I can show you the exact tools to use in Earnable.)
