Candidate,

One time I couldn't figure out how to lace my shoelaces in a certain way, so I asked my dad. He burst out laughing, then showed me.

The next time I tied them that way, I snapped a picture to send to him, along with a "thank you" message. I can only imagine how that made him feel.

Another time I remember getting a small gift -- just a simple hand-written card -- from someone I'd helped with business stuff years ago. I've always remembered that.

Over the years I've learned that this showing of gratitude isn't all that common. It isn't something we're explicitly taught, but it makes a world of difference.

Think about it: There are situations where we just KNOW to say "thank you":

  • A stranger holds the door open for you
  • Your wait staff brings you that extra bread you requested
  • The cashier hands you a receipt

"Thank you" in these instances is almost automatic AND expected. But then there are many other instances where we might just forget to say it because it's not expected.

It's in those moments that I feel explicit gratitude counts the most.

And that brings me to you.
